How technology has changed society's expectations of mass media and culture.

Internet creating a new platform for music consumption

Gone are the days when TV and radio were everything for music lovers. The entertainment landscape has changed significantly. In the yesteryears, people relied so heavily on radio and TV to watch or listen to their best music. Today, the situation is different. People are shifting to online where they can listen to music on iTunes and YouTube. This is a new event that has rendered TV and radio secondary in terms of medium. Internet is becoming ostensibly the primary platform where people can listen to any time of music they want. YouTube and iTunes offer discretion for customers to decide what they can listen to. There is an absolute control on the playlist by listeners unlike before when DJs could control what the audience could listen to.

Culturally, society has always favored radio and TV. This is no longer the case, due to the internet. The Internet has created an opportunity for online users to have a choice of what they should listen to. The discretion for a music enthusiast to download or listen to the music of their choosing was never thought of before. We believed that radio and TV would continuously regulate what we can listen to. Previously, some songs could not be played on TV or radio due to explicitness. Now, the audience is in control of what they can listen to. In utter shock, TV viewership is drastically nosediving. Let’s our attention now focus on new platforms such as iTunes to enjoy the content of our own choice.
